Canon World

Hannibal's world is set in and around modern day Balitomore, Maryland, as well as the DC area. It begins when FBI profiler Will Graham is recruited by Jack Crawford, the head of Behavioral Sciences, to help investigate a serial killer in Minnesota. With the investigation weighing heavily on Graham, Crawford decides to have him supervised by forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Initially, Lecter works to manipulate the FBI from within, but the bond he builds with Graham begin to threaten his longevity. Lecter is fascinated by Graham's ability to empathize with psychopathic murderers, and tries to push the boundaries of Graham's fragile sanity in order to turn him into a killer himself. (summary snagged from Wikipedia)

Hannibal's world is essential our own, which is part of what makes his actions so unsettling. He hosts lavish dinner parties in his Baltimore mansion, attends the opera, and assists the FBI with their investigations as a psychiatrist and consultant.

The show takes place over the course of approximately three years (the timeline is never officially stated), showing the development of the relationship between Hannibal and Will, as well as the FBI's ongoing hunt for the serial killer known as the Chesapeake Ripper. Who is, in fact, Hannibal.

During Season 3, Hannibal turns himself in to the FBI and is incarcerated, but Will aids in his escape. The two fight off Francis Dolarhyde, another serial killer wanted by the FBI, and together they kill him. At the end of the episode, Will embraces Hannibal and tips them over the cliff into the water below. This is where Hannibal is taken from. Unfortunately that means he suffers from a gunshot wound to the side and likely others from his fall.

History

Information about this particular Hannibal can be found here. I also take part of his childhood from Hannibal Rising, though with timelines altered to the Cold War rather than World War II. (Luckilly, the USSR was still a heavy presence in Lithuania at that time, so the shift in time doesn't effect too terribly much.)

The NBC show does not go into great detail about Hannibal's background (I think because they don't have rights to the book), and so I take quite a few details from Harris's Hannibal Rising, but move the dates up to fit with NBC's modern take. Hannibal's timeline is as follows.

- Russian occupation of Lithuania during the Cold War forces the Lecters to flee to the countryside
- Hannibal's parents killed by Russian soldiers
- Mercenaries find Hannibal hiding with his younger sister, Mischa
- The mercenaries kill and eat Mischa, but Hannibal manages to escape
- Hannibal grows up in the Russian run boarding school in Lithuania in what used to be his family home
- Hannibal runs to France to find and live with his aunt
- Hannibal's first kill: a man who insulted his aunt in the market
- Accepted to Johns Hopkins medical school in Baltimore
- Systematically hunts down and kills the men who killed his sister
- Graduates top of his class at Johns Hopkins, becomes a surgeon in Baltimore
- After losing a patient on the table, he seeks out a degree and then a career in psychology instead
- His taste for blood and human flesh unsated, Hannibal continues to kill occasionally, becoming the killer the FBI know as The Chesapeake Ripper.

And this is where we find Hannibal at the start of the show. Keeping his enemies as close as possible by working as a consultant with the FBI while keeping his private practice in Baltimore.

Personality

What makes Hannibal tick?
Curiosity, mostly. A drive to learn more about the human condition. His aunt, at one point, called him a monster. His psychiatrist told him he was a creature wearing a person suit. He's taken these things to heart, but rather than consider himself less than human, Hannibal fancies himself as something more than. In one episode, he's eating a victim's leg in front of the victim, and his victim brings up the subject of cannibalism. Hannibal informs him that it's only cannibalism if they are equals. He is an apex predator, hunting only those he finds lesser than him. And most people are lesser than him.

In some ways, what makes Hannibal tick is seeing what makes others tick. Wind them up and watch how they go. He fancies himself a sort of chess master, putting people in places like pieces on a board and seeing how they play against each other. Both for his own amusement and his own advancement.

What are his reactions to fear and stress and helplessness?
Hannibal felt helpless, once, long ago, in that cabin in the middle of winter, with Russian mercenaries closing in. He doesn't care to feel that way ever again. So he fights.

But he's a strategist, as well. If he sees he can't win in a fight, he will flee, but only as a last result. He's much more likely to try and either debate or physically fight his way out of a situation than run from it.

In reaction to the sort of stress that Silent Hill provides, Hannibal will retreat somewhere quiet until he can come up with a proper plan of action. He can run into a fight unprepared if he absolutely has to, but he'd rather know every iteration, every possible outcome before he dives into something.

How much is he going to view the other characters in the game as emergency rations?
He'll be careful. He'll ally himself with people he thinks could be advantageous to him. Those who are clever or physically strong. Only the weak would be weeded out to be eaten.

Or the rude.

The thing about Hannibal is that his urges are not uncontrollable. He isn't a psychopath, killing whenever the need takes him. He sits, and he waits.

He'd work quietly and focus on those already injured, or those who had separated themselves from the pack for some reason. Loners who might not be missed. After all, it wouldn't do to draw suspicion when he might need some of these people in order to survive.

Is there something specific he regrets, some reason Silent Hill might target him?
Hannibal has three great regrets in his life: Mischa, his aunt Lady Murasaki, and Will Graham.

He regrets down to whatever soul he has that he allowed his sister to be killed. It's a wound he still carries with him today. One of the mercenaries claims that Hannibal took part in the stew they made from Mischa, and the idea of that haunts him to this day. That he might have had some part in the killing of his sister.

He regrets the way he and his aunt parted. She was his first great love, and he tried to show her his affection through gestures like killing a man who insulted her and giving her his head. She tried to get him to stop his mission to find and kill all the men who killed his sister, and when he refused, she said there was nothing in him left to love. These words are etched into his memory, and he thinks about them still. What sort of creature he is, what sort of companion he could find in his monstrosity. He still wishes they had parted on better terms, or not parted at all.

This is where Will Graham comes in. Oh, Will, his remarkable boy. (I think I'll eat your heart) Hannibal loves Will dearly. Something beyond romantic. An obsession. He feels that Will is the one person who might accept and love a creature like him. What he does regret is how hard he pushed Will in the beginning stages of their relationship. He gaslighted him and kept him sick on purpose in order to manipulate him, and Will suffered a deep psychological break because of it. Hannibal regrets that now, and feels he went too far with it.

He does not, however, regret helping Will become the man he is today. The killer he is today. He feels he has helped Will realize his true self.

He also does not regret any of the murders he's committed, nor the pain he's put people through. Almost all of it was for his own amusement, and he's enjoyed all of it very much.

Special Abilities

Hannibal keeps fit. He exercises regularly, either running or swimming laps, depending on the season. He's incredibly fast and extremely agile, which tends to put him at an advantage during fights with other humans. He's well studied with a variety of weapons, mostly swords and knives.

He is an excellent hunter. Able to be patient and wait until the right point to strike.

He also has an incredibly keen sense of smell, able to sniff out things like cancer and brain disease.
